ROM to Karting: Rainy Day Activities for Ontario Families and Groups

The best rainy day activities in Ontario fall into four types: museums and galleries, hands-on science centres, active indoor venues, and climate-controlled malls with underground walkways. Museums and science centres suit families and couples, while active venues work best for groups, parties and teams. Most can be booked online ahead of time, so you can settle the plan.

TL;DR:

  • The Ontario Science Centre’s interim site at Harbourfront Centre offers exhibits similar to KidSpark and interactive stations while its permanent facility remains incomplete.
  • Rainy weekends draw crowds indoors, especially around midday, so arrive when venues open or visit in late afternoon; reserve timed entry online when available.
  • The ROM and AGO receive nearly $70 million in annual government operating support, while ROM’s 2026 March Break program included some activities with regular admission.
  • For karting, climbing, and trampoline venues, check age and height limits before booking, and wear shoes with closed toes and comfortable clothing.

Table of Contents

1. Which indoor activity types work best across Ontario?

Pick the type that matches your group, then add one practical habit to keep the day smooth.

  • Museums and galleries: The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) anchor Toronto’s rainy day scene, and ROM runs seasonal family programming such as March Break activities. Best for families and couples. Arrive at opening to see the headline exhibits before the crowds build.
  • Hands-on science: The Ontario Science Centre now runs an interim site at Harbourfront Centre, with KidSpark-style exhibits, interactive stations and workshop space. Best for kids who learn by touching things. Plan enough time to explore at a comfortable pace.
  • Active indoor venues: Indoor karting, climbing gyms, trampoline parks and bookable group games burn energy fast. Best for birthday parties, teams and teenagers. Check age and height limits, and wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes.
  • Arcades and food halls: Low prep, easy to leave and return, and friendly to mixed ages. Bring a snack budget and agree on a time limit before you go in.
  • Malls and the PATH: Toronto’s PATH underground network) and large shopping complexes let you move across downtown without going outside. Good for a full day with lunch built in. Pick a meeting spot in case your group splits up.

Pro Tip: Mix one calm stop and one active stop in the same day. A museum in the morning and a game session in the afternoon keeps kids from hitting a wall.

2. Where should you go in Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa and Markham?

Each of these cities has a dependable wet weather option within a short trip of most neighborhoods.

  • Toronto: The ROM is the easy first choice for families, and the Ontario Science Centre’s Harbourfront Centre site adds hands-on exhibits near the waterfront. To stay undercover, link the PATH with the Eaton Centre and stop for lunch in between.
  • Mississauga: Square One is the obvious anchor, and TripAdvisor’s 2026 list of indoor things to do in the city points to major malls and family attractions. Pair a mall trip with an indoor activity so kids get more than shopping.
  • Ottawa: The national museums and galleries offer indoor exhibits that can fill an entire day. Go early on weekends, since rainy days send many locals to the same buildings.
  • Markham: Local listings on TripAdvisor show strong interest in family play centres and theatres. Both are easy to combine into one outing.

Planning a trip beyond the city? Ontariocamping collects indoor attractions across the province, including the Canadian Canoe Museum and the Thousand Islands Playhouse, which helps when rain catches you at a campsite.

3. How do you plan a smooth rainy-day outing?

A little planning turns a soggy backup plan into a good day. Follow these steps.

  1. Choose your window. Rainy weekends push everyone indoors at the same time, so mid-day is the busiest stretch. Arrive at opening, or head out in the late afternoon.
  2. Book ahead. Reserve timed entry online where it’s offered, and check for special programming such as March Break schedules before you leave home.
  3. Decide how you’ll travel. Museum and downtown stops are easy by transit. For malls and large attractions, check parking before you go, since lots fill quickly in bad weather.
  4. Check accessibility and family facilities. Look on each venue’s site for stroller parking, coat check and family washrooms, because details vary by location.
  5. Pack for wet arrivals. Bring a spare layer for kids and a bag for wet umbrellas.

Pro Tip: Message your group the plan and meeting spot the night before. Rainy mornings go better when nobody is deciding at the door.

4. Why are Ontario’s cultural sites strong rainy-day bets?

Ontario’s big museums have funding and programming to support visitors. The province announced $21 million per year in operating funding for the AGO and ROM, which supports expanded programming.

Nearly $70 million annually in total government operating support now backs AGO and ROM exhibitions and programming, following a permanent operating funding increase.

That support shows up on the floor. ROM’s March Break programming ran March 14–22, 2026, with a Wild Photo Walk, Ask a ROM Expert, animal face painting, Earth Rangers Studio activities and BASF Kids’ Lab chromatography workshops, and many activities were included with regular admission. The Ontario Science Centre’s Harbourfront Centre site adds KidSpark-style exhibits and interactive stations for families until the permanent facility is complete.

5. What works best for groups on a rainy day?

We run indoor events for kids’ birthdays, corporate teams and sports squads, and the pattern is consistent: groups stay happiest when the activity has a bit of structure and friendly competition. Customizable indoor packages take the planning stress out of a wet forecast, because the games, space and timing are settled before anyone arrives. Our guide to indoor team building games shows what we mean, and our booking pages hold current details and availability.
