Dodgeball vs Handball: How the Two Games Differ

Dodgeball and handball are different sports. In dodgeball you throw a ball to hit opponents and eliminate them. In team handball you throw a ball to score in a goal. The confusion is real, though. Many Canadians remember a gym-class game that someone called “handball” and someone else called dodgeball, and kickball gets pulled into the same conversation. Below we sort out which game is which, how they compare, and which one fits your group.

TL;DR

  • Dodgeball is an elimination game: hit or catch to get an opponent out, with no goal and no scoring zone.
  • Handball is a goal-scoring sport: you throw the ball into the opposing net.
  • Kickball is closer to baseball than to either of them. It is a common starter sport because it needs almost no skill or equipment, and dodgeball is another easy entry point.
  • For a party or team event with mixed skill levels, dodgeball is the easiest of the three to run in one room, and we host it at our Pickering venue.

Why people mix up dodgeball and handball

The overlap comes from the verb. Both games are built around throwing a ball with your hands, and both are fast and loud. A gym teacher in one school might call a throwing game “handball” while the school down the road calls it dodgeball. Meanwhile, the Olympic-style sport called team handball has its own rulebook, its own court and its own goals.

So when someone types “dodgeball vs handball,” they are usually asking one of three things:

  1. Is dodgeball just a version of handball? (No.)
  2. Which one is better for a group outing? (Usually dodgeball.)
  3. Is the game I played at school the same as either one? (Depends on local rules, but the rules below tell you.)

What dodgeball is

Dodgeball is a team sport in which players on two opposing teams try to throw balls and hit opponents while avoiding being hit themselves. The objective is to eliminate every member of the other team. A player is out when struck by a live ball, and a catch can send the thrower out instead. As one report on the professional game puts it, the basics are the same: get hit or get caught, get out.

There is no goal, no net and no position that requires a specialist. That is why the game works for a nine-year-old’s birthday and for a department of accountants.

The competitive version

Dodgeball is more organized than most people expect. The World Dodgeball Federation publishes rules for both cloth and foam ball formats. Its 2024 World Championships in Graz, Austria, had 35 participating countries and 123 teams. Professional matches described by AP use five cloth balls and six players per team, with two 15-minute halves.

Dodgeball championship scale and match format

For recreational play, foam is the norm. It is softer, it stings less, and it lets you relax and play. Recreational rules also tend to be looser than tournament rules, which is where organizers get to choose a format. Our guide to dodgeball game modes and rule templates walks through the options.

What handball is

Team handball is a sport where the aim is to score by throwing a ball into the opponent’s goal. Defenders try to block the throw or steal the ball. Nobody is eliminated for being hit. The contest is about moving the ball toward a target, much like soccer played with the hands.

That difference changes everything about the experience:

  • Scoring: handball counts goals. Dodgeball counts players left standing.
  • Contact with the ball: in handball you pass, dribble and shoot. In dodgeball you throw at people, and dodge and catch.
  • Equipment: handball needs goals and a marked court. Dodgeball needs balls and a space with a centre line.
  • Skill curve: handball rewards practice with passing and shooting. Dodgeball has a gentler start.

What about wall handball and “downball”?

In some regions, “handball” also means a different game, played against a wall with a small ball, and schoolyard variants go by names like downball. These are not team elimination games, and rules vary by school and city. If someone in your group says “I played handball at school,” ask them one question: was there a goal, a wall, or a line of kids throwing at each other? The answer tells you which game they mean.

Where kickball fits in

People searching this topic often add kickball, so here is the short comparison. Kickball borrows its structure from baseball: one team kicks a rubber ball and runs bases, the other fields. Dodgeball is a continuous throwing game with no bases and no innings.

What they share is accessibility. According to a guide for adult league organizers, kickball is a popular first sport because it requires almost no skill or equipment and appeals to both genders equally, and dodgeball is another easy entry point. Both are fun to watch even if you are not an athlete.

The practical difference is space and time:

  • Kickball needs a field or a large gym, a base layout and enough players to field a defence. A game can run long, and the players in the outfield may spend stretches standing around.
  • Dodgeball works in a single indoor court. Everyone is involved on every throw, rounds last minutes, and you can reset and run another one straight away.

That last point matters for an event with a fixed time slot. Short rounds mean nobody sits out for long, and a late arrival can join the next game.

Which game suits which group

Kids’ birthday parties

Dodgeball and its cousins win here because children understand the rules in about a minute. Foam balls keep it gentle, and short rounds keep attention. Handball needs more explanation and more space, and kickball needs enough kids to fill the field.

If you are planning a party, look at our kids’ birthday party packages. Game On Birthday Party starts from $399 and Epic Birthday Party from $499. We run the activities and plan the event with you.

Corporate team building

A mixed group has people who run marathons and people who have not exercised since high school. Dodgeball suits this because it asks for almost no prior skill and is engaging to watch for non-athletes. Colleagues cheer from the sideline, rotate in, and the game produces natural stories for Monday morning.

Our corporate dodgeball booking guide covers group sizes and formats, and our team building page lists packages. Collab Package starts from $699.

Sports teams and leagues

Teams that already train together tend to want a break from their own sport. A dodgeball session reshuffles the hierarchy: the star striker is not automatically the best dodger. If you are organizing an end-of-season event, see our sports team party ideas and our sports team event packages, where Game On Team Battle starts from $399.

Schools and youth groups

Dodgeball has a reputation problem in some school gyms because older versions let strong throwers target the same child repeatedly. Sport and education stakeholders in Canada have called for a shift away from “win-at-all-costs” toward person-centric, fun-focused models. That is the right instinct for a youth group. In practice it means soft balls, clear rules, a supervisor who steps in, and game modes that bring eliminated players back in. Our 90-minute run sheet for youth group dodgeball is built around exactly that.

Game night and small groups

If you have six to ten friends and want something that is not a board game, dodgeball scales down well. For more ideas, we put together indoor game night ideas that start small and scale up.

Playing it safely

Throwing games are only fun when everyone feels safe. The ball matters: foam balls are the norm for recreational play, while cloth is increasingly used in competitive formats, and the World Dodgeball Federation rules distinguish between them. Whatever the ball, a well-run game has:

  • A clear boundary line and a rule that you stay behind it.
  • An agreed policy on head hits, so everyone knows before the first throw.
  • A way back in for eliminated players, especially for children.
  • A staff member or adult who actually watches the court.
  • A rule that nobody gets singled out. If a child is being targeted, the supervisor stops it.

Canadian safe-sport research shows why supervision is not optional. One study reported in a university safe sport text found that 84.5% of Canadian youth aged 14 to 17 in sport had experienced at least one form of psychological or physical abuse. That research covers organized sport in general, not dodgeball, but it is a reminder that youth play should happen in managed environments. If you are booking for a school, a camp or a youth group, ask the venue who supervises and how rules are explained to the group.

Our perspective: what we see on the court

We run dodgeball alongside combat archery, Nerf battles, bazooka ball, axe throwing, ping pong and arcade games, so we see every kind of group try them. Here is what we have taken from that.

Dodgeball is the game people think they know. Adults arrive saying they were terrible at it in Grade 6, and the first round proves it can be different with foam balls, clear rules and a facilitator. That is the point of a venue: someone else handles the rules, the equipment and the fairness, so you can just play.

We also think the best group events mix formats. A group that plays dodgeball for 30 minutes and then moves to archery or Nerf has two shared stories instead of one. Mixed packages also solve the problem that not everyone enjoys the same thing. Someone who hates being thrown at may love target games.

Finally, we would rather you pick the game that fits your people than the one with the best name. Handball is a great sport, but it asks for goals, a court and some practice. If your goal is a party or a team afternoon, you want something your guests can play in the first five minutes.

A quick way to decide

Ask three questions:

  1. How many people, and how varied is their fitness? Larger, mixed groups favour dodgeball.
  2. How much time do you have? A 60 to 90 minute slot suits dodgeball’s short rounds. Kickball needs more room and patience.
  3. Do you want a sport or an event? If people are there to learn a sport, handball is rewarding. If they are there to laugh together, pick the elimination game.

FAQ

What is the difference between handball and dodgeball?

Handball is played by scoring goals: you throw the ball into the opponent’s net. Dodgeball has no goal. You win by hitting or catching opponents until none are left on the other side. The two share a throwing motion and little else.

Is dodgeball a real competitive sport?

Yes. The World Dodgeball Federation runs international competition, and its 2024 World Championships in Austria drew teams from 35 countries. Competitive play uses both cloth and foam formats, with set team sizes and timed halves.

Is kickball or dodgeball better for a team event?

For most indoor events, dodgeball. It needs only one court, rounds are short and everyone is involved on every throw. Kickball is fun and easy to learn, but it needs more space and a larger group to keep everyone engaged.

Is dodgeball safe for kids?

It can be, when it is run properly. Use soft foam balls, agree on head-hit and boundary rules, bring eliminated players back in, and have an adult supervising the court. Ask any venue how it manages these before you book.
